L\u2019identit\u00e0 e le paure dei benestanti\u00a0 <\/b>(Editoriale di Frank Barbaro)<\/h2>\n
Se esiste un senso di assedio fra i cittadini che vivono nel mondo occidentale, non \u00e8\u00a0 dovuto ad invasioni in corso o al fatto che gli immigrati o i musulmani siano forti e potenti.<\/div>\n
Nel considerare le cause di queste ansie che si diffondono, spesso fomentate da governi ansiosi di presentarsi come tutori dei loro cittadini,\u00a0 sarebbe utile riflettere sull\u2019insicurezza e le incertezze che rendono le persone suscettibili a paure poco fondate.<\/div>\n

Gli immigrati vengono spesso accusati di non volersi integrare o addirittura di voler cambiare il nostro modo di vivere. A me sembra che un\u2019attrazione potente per queste persone, spinte dalla necessit\u00e0 e dalla voglia di vivere in societ\u00e0 prive di guerre e di instabilit\u00e0, sia lo stato di benessere e lo stile di vita occidentali, che sono stati sempre presentati come un modello a cui aspirare.<\/div>\n
In realt\u00e0, si tratta di un modello creato con grandi costi sociali e ambientali, che oggi non regge pi\u00f9 neanche in Occidente, dove le sue lacune e debolezze sono sempre pi\u00f9 evidenti.<\/div>\n
I segni contradditori di questa problematica sono molti, per esempio il fatto che ormai gli immigrati – regolari o irregolari – svolgono un ruolo strategico e sono ben accetti in settori caratterizzati da lavori umili e poco pagati.<\/div>\n
Ma una parte di questa insicurezza riguarda la questione dell\u2019identit\u00e0, sia a livello individuale che nazionale, all\u2019interno delle varie culture occidentali, un\u2019insicurezza per\u00f2 che non ha\u00a0 a che fare con gli ultimi arrivati, ma con i grandi e aggressivi cambiamenti in atto a livello globale.<\/div>\n
Negli ultimi decenni, una larga fetta della democrazia parlamentare \u00e8 stata trasferita ai privati che dispongono dei capitali per decidere nel concreto le sorti dei vari paesi, la loro sicurezza economica e sociale. In questo processo va ricercata l\u2019origine del senso di impotenza (powerlessness) che pervade le persone, e non tanto nel trauma generato dalla presenza di poveri e di profughi.<\/div>\n
Se oggi l\u2019italiano si sente meno italiano, pu\u00f2 darsi che non sia estraneo a questa sensazione il fatto che la FIAT non \u00e8 pi\u00f9 italiana. Lo stesso effetto pu\u00f2 aver avuto sugli australiani l\u2019abbandono della GM-Holden.<\/div>\n

Identity and fears of the well off<\/b><\/h2>\n

If there is a sense of siege among the citizens in the well off West, it is not due to invasions or that immigrants or Muslims are strong and powerful.<\/div>\n
In considering the causes of anxieties, often fomented by governments keen to present themselves as guardians, it may be useful to reflect on insecurities and uncertainties that make people susceptible to unfounded fears.<\/div>\n
Immigrants are often accused of not wanting to integrate or of wanting to change our way of life. It seems that a powerful attraction to a Western lifestyle is the need and desire to live in peaceful and stable societies whose affluence has become a model to aspire.<\/div>\n
The fact is that this is model has been created at a great social and environmental cost that is no longer sustainable.<\/div>\n
The contradictory relationship to migrants and refugees is evident. For example, immigrants \u2013 legal or illegal – play a strategic role and are well accepted in menial and poorly paid jobs.<\/div>\n
Part of Western insecurity concerns the issue of identity, individually and nationally, and has little to do with recent arrivals but a lot to do with major and aggressive global changes.<\/div>\n
Over the last few decades a broad slice of parliamentary democracy has been transferred to the private sector that today can even determine the destiny of countries and their economic and social security. The sense of powerlessness is to be found in these processes and not in the trauma generated by the presence of the poor and refugees.<\/div>\n
If today Italians feel less Italian, it may not be unrelated to the fact that FIAT is no longer Italian, the same way that GM\u2019s abandonment of Holden may have affected Australian identity.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
