Richard has a deep connection to country and skill as a river guide. He saw first hand the harm done to the birthplace of some of our iconic rivers. The Snowy Mountains is home to the headwaters of the Snowy, Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers yet the delicate alpine ecosystem that supports these vital water sources is being trampled. It led him and his partner, Alison to start a campaign highlighting the damage done by feral horses in the Kosciuszko National Park.

The alpine area that covers only point zero one percent of Australia’s inhabited land mass is under threat from a combination of the impacts of feral animals, artificial water flows and climate change. In his active and public role as Indigenous Ambassador for the Invasive Species Council, Richard confronts orchestrated animosities. The film brings together respected Aboriginal community leaders as well as a farmer, a scientist, a former parks officer and an academic who interprets the root cause of the antagonism that prevents the best of Aboriginal connection and the best of regenerative science to collaborate so that we can all move forward positively together.

Richard and Alison’s personal journey is complimented by Indigenous voices remapping and reframing a region mostly known for it’s tourism and the Snowy Scheme; some of whom feel that the natural habitat of the high country is in very grave danger. At the historic gathering and water healing ceremony, Narjong, Major ‘Moogy’ Sumner, a Ngarrindjeri Elder said, ‘ This country is where all the water starts, it’s supposed to flow freely down to our country and it don’t.’ After fighting the catastrophic wildfires that surrounded his community in 2019-2020, Richard continues his campaign with even greater determination.

Fabio Cavadini is a dedicated long term member of FILEF (for four decades) and documentary cinematographer along with partner, Mandy King.
