Sotto il nostro naso e davanti ai nostri occhi
La mancanza di una risposta urgente e immediata per fermare la barbarie del governo israeliano nei confronti dei palestinesi è un esempio estremo dell’incapacità dei governi mondiali di presiedere e rappresentare.
Le rappresaglie israeliane contro i palestinesi non sono iniziate a Gaza in seguito all’attacco di Hamas del 7 ottobre 2023, né con il blocco di Gaza durato 16 anni, ma fanno seguito all’esproprio forzato (ancora in corso) dei territori palestinesi e alla negazione dello Stato palestinese.
Laprova del fatto che il governo israeliano non abbia bisogno del pretesto di Hamas per usare la forza sono le sue azioni in Cisgiordania, l’altra metà dei territori occupati.
Secondo l’organizzazione israeliana per i diritti umani B’Tselem, dall’inizio della guerra contro il popolo di Gaza, 16 villaggi palestinesi sono stati completamente sfollati a causa degli attacchi dei coloni.
Proprio come nel caso dei rischi legati al cambiamento climatico, queste crisi sono interamente provocate dall’uomo e mettono in luce l’inadeguatezza dei governi.
Questi si limitano a temporeggiare, e mentre lasciano che il riscaldamento globale proceda con conseguenze catastrofiche, hanno anche difficoltà a soddisfare gli standard di vita richiesti, finanche nei paesi una volta agiati, nonostante la loro considerevole ricchezza.
Sotto il nostro naso e davanti ai nostri occhi i governi stanno perdendo i mezzi per risolvere urgenti bisogni sociali e ambientali.
Si pensi ai tagli fiscali rivisti dal governo australiano, su cui è lecito avere delle perplessità: perchè si tagliano le tasse, date le difficoltà nel finanziare beni di base come la sanità e l’edilizia abitativa?
Si stima che i tagli fiscali della Fase 3 costeranno 105,7 miliardi di dollari da questo anno finanziario al 2027-28.
Questo denaro potrebbe finanziare la rete di sicurezza sociale e il ripristino ambientale, e invece lo si vuole immettere nell’economia, esponendolo all’inflazione e al pericolo che venga disperso a causa della voracità dei mercati, attratti dai profitti.
Queste e altre calamità, tutte evitabili, stanno accadendo, ora e in pieno giorno.
Under our nose and before our very eyes
The lack of urgent and immediate response to stop the Israeli Government’s barbarity to Palestinians is an extreme example of world governments’ failure to preside and represent.
Israeli reprisals against Palestinians did not start in Gaza following Hamas’ attack on 7 October 2023, nor with the 16-year blockade of Gaza, but are part of the ongoing forceful expropriation of Palestinian land and denial of Palestinian statehood.
Current evidence that the Israeli Government does not need the pretext of Hamas to use force is its actions in the West Bank, the other half of the occupied territories.
According the the Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem since the start of the war against the Gaza people, 16 Palestinian villages have been completely displaced as a result of settler attacks.
Just as with climate change risks, these crises are entirely man-made and herald the inadequacy of governments.
Governments are still fiddling while global warming proceeds with catastrophic consequences and governments are having trouble meeting expected living standards even in previously comfortable countries, notwithstanding their considerable wealth.
Under our nose and before our very eyes governments are shedding means to resolve urgent social and environmental needs.
An example is the Australian Government’s revised tax cuts which beg the question of why cut taxes at all given difficulties in funding basics such as health and housing.
The Stage 3 tax cuts are now estimated to cost $105.7 billion from this financial year to 2027–28.
This money could fund the social safety net and environmental repair instead of releasing it into the economy with its inflationary risk and the risk of it being usurped by voracious market pricing for profits.
These and other calamities, all avoidable, are happening, now and in broad daylight.
